Well the headline is not misleading, there is actually a search engine that is better than Google in many aspects. How is it better? What does it do? Can it beat google? We will be finding answers to all those questions in this blog post.

Wolfram Alpha vs Google

Wolfram Alpha vs Google

What is this search engines ?

This search engine is developed by a british physicist Stephen Wolfram and the it is known as Wolfram Alpha. And I must say that Wolfram Alpha is not just another search engine.

Wolfram Alpha search engine

Wolfram Alpha search engine

How is it better ?

Google is not the real things that solves your problems, it is just an index of solutions. But Wolfram Alpha just is the one that really gives you the solution to your query directly rather than bringing out loads of results that might have just been there due to loads of SEO but no content.

What does it do ?

It does what a search engine is meant for, but rather than showing webpages from around the web, it shows the most relevant results as the output. Well I think that, just reading this plain text can be a bit confusing. So here are some examples of what this search engine can do:

Well you can find the whole list of searchable examples here:

This was a quick review of this phenomenal search engine that will easily get ahead of Google once it gets popular enough.

Well bro, Wolfram Aplha has been around for almost 2 years now and had gathered enough hype when it was just about to release but now 2 years down the lane there is not much it has done. It has not been able to actually gain as much popularity as Yahoo or Bing. It is suffering the same fate as Cuil and other search engines that are there. It really has to perform some vodoo magic to beat Google

Well, I think that it has not been promoted as it should have been.
I just came to know about it and thus thought about sharing it with my readers and friends.

Hey Karan

I got to know about Wolfram Alpha myself just a about a week or so back. Although it’s pretty cool for the stuff that you have mentioned, it fails a lot many other times where Google works. Hence I think it will be fair to say, that Wolfram Alpha is not really a search engine but more a decision engine (which Bing likes to brand itself as and incidentally, they are using Wolfram). Of course, with time, it will improve.

You’re are fairly right Sid!

Due to toughest competition search engines changing their algorithms to best possible results to searchers, Wolfarm alpha is a new for me…

Well Karan! The Title of the post is a little bit confusing.
I think wolframalpha is a knowledge database working like a software.
We can’t said it a search engine.

Well, I am really speechless.
Lolz. ;)

Wol. Alpha is great for people who know a lot of the variables involved in the search. It is especially cool for scientists and tech data searches! Otherwise…i doubt it beats Google.

Well I too really found it amazingly cool.

First time I ever hear of wolfram(search engine not the chemical element). It seems like a knowledge database, that can do maths problems :) . And it doesn’t give you websites as results, but it gives you the information directly, that would be something more than a search engine wouldn’t it?

It’s more like a technical, scientific and mathematical search engines, or something used by scientist (my opinion).
Nonetheless it’s a cool find now I can plot my graphs and simplex much easier :)

WolframAlpha is a semantic. And it’s different with Google. But, for web pages search, Google is the best.

Karan Labra November 9, 2010 at

Well, yes you are right Gojeg. W-Alpha can beat google with just a bit tweaking and a section which searches the web. But still it will face a really hard time getting known.

I will go for google search as it is better and user friendly. I think Google is better as it matches user needs

Well that’s your opinion and I respect it! :)

Hi Karan,

I guess as a computational machine it is interesting. It certainly doesn’t return search results. Try searching your own url or your name. If I search my name in Google, my website comes up as the first result. In Wolfram, I get a message saying “Development of this topic is under investigation.”

If you go to the bottom right hand of the Wolfram page, you’ll see that you can search the web. Click it, and… Google comes up.

It is interesting, and I had never heard of it before, and will probably use it. But it certainly is misleading to say that it in any way challenges the massive engine that is Google. You can even do calculations and things like that with Google.

Interesting site though.

My pleasure, Karan. I’m a bit of a geek and finding Wolfram somewhat fun to play around with.
